Toshiba.

From all the laptops i have used so far Toshiba, IBM and Fujitsu have been the best for me. All three are reliable machines and are hardy. Toshiba is the most long lasting laptop i've ever had. It's a satellite. it's over 8 years old and it's still working. IBM comes with plenty of useful software. Fujitsu's are hardy as they have an aluminium casing and for now only Fujitsu's are manufactured only in Japan, not anywhere else. But if you are looking for a long lasting good laptop, go for Toshiba. I've had many problems with HP and DELL.

Whatever you do dont buy Dell. Cheap laptops but the service and backup is very bad indeed.

Been very happy with Toshiba and prices are competative

Do not go for Dell (bad Customer service and replacement) or Sony Vaio (as it accepts no generic replacements and/or [internal] upgrades).

I recommends Acer or Toshiba.
For practicality, have as much RAM as you can afford. The more RAM the faster programs run and the more you can multi-task programs. Should have at least 512MB.

Dell ok, Sony ok, Toshiba used to be the leader but others have caught up, still ok though. Large businesses get good deals on HP/compaq; small businesses buy dell.
