I don't know anyone who has made that exact change, but I do have a friend that became a professional photographer after being an engineer for 20 years. The change was an excellent one for him because he had savings from his first career and some experience as a photographer from his high school and college years. He is a lot happier now, and he enjoys not having to sit in a cubicle every day.
If you have a lot of savings built up, and you have experience as an artist, I'd definitely say make the switch. You will have more fun in your profession, if you are going to be a professional artist. A word of advice, though: the going may be rocky in the beginning, as you will need to plan all of your expenses of materials and how your business is going to work. Good luck!

Me, kinda. I had a screen printing/retail business. I was forced out of it when stuff fell on me in Wal-Mart and injured me to the point I couldn't operate it anymore. So, while I am healing, I picked up the paintbrush, and paint as my body allows it. My subject is mandalas. My medium is acrylics on canvas. I have sold about half a dozen. Not making me rich, but I am exploring my art. Making lemonade out of lemons, ya know what I mean?
