I use regular CD-R to burn my music and I have never had a problem. Rumor says that Music CD-R are more expensive because a fraction of the price goes to the recording industry but I dont know. I have tried Music CD-R and I dont hear any difference between Music CD-R and a regular CD-R.

Depends on what you want to burn, and what type of Burner you have.
Most times you will need a CD-R for a one time burn. This is best for archives or music cds.
For other uses, you would want a CD-RW disc, only if your burner can handle those types of discs.
It goes without saying you need a CD Burner to burn a CD.
A DVD burner can also burn CDs.
A CD ROM cannot burn a CD.

Music CDs should accept any audio format, but it's generally accepted that *.MP3 is the best quality extention. (I personally have little preference, besides that *.MIDI's have really bad quality)
