sure, coworkers do it all the time, just so as not to make waves. or, if the 2 people have a mutual friend who really wants them to get along, then the 2 people might give it a try, to make their friend happy.

do they really *hate* each other?

Of course, if their survival depends on it. I don't even necessarily mean life and death survival. The concept of society depends on this trait. An individual who does not learn to "get along," either finds himself ostracized or put away. That is the "order" part of the phrase, "Law and Order."
