Because they can and are not concerned about you or your co-workers as people or that you are respected or not or that your standard of living suffers while theirs increases. It is called greed or gimme gimme gimme. Trust me if they can automate your job that even means more money for them America has become all about greed and money and love and friendship are out of the equation here.

Technically they are not voting to give themselves raise, they are voting for the next term of congress to have a raise. It is a very messed up system. The problem is that they pass the laws so it would take an enormous effort on the part of the people to correct this. We should also have term limits for them. The founding father never meant for anyone to be a lifelong single job politician

The reason Congress can vote to give themselves raises is because all financial expenditures are started in the House of Representatives because all house members are up for elections every two years. If the House of Representatives pass a financial bill, it then goes to the Senate. If the bill passes there, the raise goes into effect.

Not all politicians CAN vote themselves a yearly pay raise. Pennsylvania lawmakers hadn't had a raise in ten years. When they tried to sneak one in over night not long ago, voters ousted the two top legislators, who had been in office for over 30 years, in just the primary! So, I don't know which politicians you're talking about, but it doesn't happen in Pennsylvania. Oh....the governor, who signed the pay raise bill btw, just signed yesterday a minimum salary increase.

raising the minimum wage is not as easy as saying, "everyone should make $10/h." every time the minimum wage is increased, it puts more pressure on the small business man who ultimately passes the cost on to consumers. anyone that makes close to minimum wage expects a raise too.
the government helps where it can, if you make less than 15,000 a year you pay no income tax. food stamps, housing assistance etc c.
finally, if your older than 20 and making minimum wage, it's time to apply yourself a little and get a better job.

Well, usually yearly reviews go out. If you are still working at a job since 1996 and haven't received a raise that's your fault.
If you are talking about min. wage then you need to get a grip and this question is stupid. You can't and weren't meant to live on min wage. Suck it up and get a real job.

Power corrupts and absolute powers corrupts absolutely - Lord Acton, a British historian
Basically if you are in charge of paying yourself over others, you will choose it everytime. Those in congress will always vote themselves a raise over the common people.

i won't be able to imagine of a time even as Congress went on record for vote casting themselves a boost. they do no longer have the "guts" to bypass on public record for vote casting for a boost. they purely propose a boost and allow it bypass into result without a vote. I believe one individual who suggested we'd want to continually hearth the total bunch.

Congress shouldn't be allowed to police themselves. They have legalized corruption. It shouldn't be tolerated.
