I have an outside electical box that is 230 volt. It was for a hot tub. I would like to run wiring off of it that will run a fan at 110 volts. I was told that I can use just one leg of the circuit. How do I do this?

Okay, I have answered this quesstion in the past for others, so I want to make sure first that you understand electricity can kill you! The voltage of 230 can be knocked down to 2x115 if done properly. First you may need to change the breaker going to the outside outlet. Right now it is a double breaker, which gets voltage from both poles of the cricuit breaker/ fuse box. You will want to change this to a 15 amp preferrably a Ground Fault Interrupt GFI type since the outlet is located out side. Remove the 230 breaker, then unattach the wiring from it. Take one wire that you removed from the breaker and connect it to the terminal strip for the ground. Remember the color of the wire insulation, as this will be changed at the out let also. Connect the remaining wire to the new breaker and insert the breaker into the panel box. Leave the breaker in the off position at this time. Now go out to the outlet and remove the recepticle. Replace the recepticle with a weather resistant duplex for outside use. The wire that you changed in the basement should connect to the white side of the recepticle. When this is done, turn on the breaker and all should work well. This will leave a blank spot in the fuse box, which should be filled in with any size breaker and left off, and marked as spare. Hope this helps.

You have 2 hot wires..each is 115 volts..When you use both you get 230 volts..Use one and cap the other off and you have 115 volts..That is if you have the third nuetral wire which should be white..Not the bare copper one.If you don't have the nuetral wire take the unused hot wire off the breaker switch and hook it to the ground system..And put a 15 amp single breaker in in place of the double one now..Easy
Crown PC says the same thing but in a much better way..Follow his steps

You call an electrician. Or you can disconnect one hot wire from the main box. Good luck.
