Some teams made little or no effort to play offense. Their only goal was to stick around long enough for a penalty shootout. (Portugal, England, Netherlands, sometimes Italy, etc.) NHL hockey had to change the rules because players were crowding around the goal and playing only defense the entire game. Led to alot of 0-0 and 1-0 games. That is pretty much what we saw during this World Cup. Except for a few select games (Germany-Costa Rica). I'll tell ya, I am all for being a traditional purist and keeping the rules the way they are, but this World Cup made me think twice about that! How bout you? (Even though I know this will never happen- the rules of football are pretty much set in stone).

Why can Americans appreciate only offense and high scoring games?

Seriously, I grew up watching soccer (or football as we call it in Europe) and never found defense boring. One great, unexpected, hard-fought goal is more exciting than 6 easy ones.

Quality matters more than quantity.

This may prove to be a problem in the future as it may make games a little boring, hence Fifa's decision to possibly eliminate the defender passing the ball back to the keeper (in the next WC). That may have a little effect but not much. I think eliminating the offside rule will see more goals in the net. That would certainly be a better solution.

ENLARGE THE GOAL.
I definitely want an increase in size - about one foot in height and two feet in width. The game was invented about 125 years ago. The goal keeper was smaller and not as quick as today's keepers.
Today's keepers jump higher and and further while diving. One writer opposes this because (he says) too many goals will be scored off of "set pieces". I do not believe that this occurred 125 years ago. Even if so, so what; increased scoring lessens the likelihood of ties.
We are not talking about a massive increase in goals, but think about two per game.

it wouldve been nice to see some more goals, but this isnt basketball. Its never been a high scorings sport, and you need to be able to appreciate what happens in the middle of the field. also whenever someone is deending the other team is attacking, so theres just as much offense goin on

yea. it made the game lose its appeal. *sigh* then again, its the world cup... everyone's just afraid to make mistakes. and they know how terrible it'll be if the opponent scores one goal. thus the crazy defending. but u know, sometimes just watching the awesome saves can be pretty entertaining. (to a point)
