A pop-up balloon appears when I try to synchronize and when I click it, there is a message about an unknown device in the USB Root Hub. I can get the Treo to synchronize via the infrared port on my laptop but the synchronization cable will not work.

From the information provided, the likely issue is that you have not installed the Palm Treo 600 driver. Infrared, Bluetooth, and Wireless connections have standardized procedures and flows which establish communications but USB connections require drivers. Check your Palm CD for drivers or their website

You probably need to download the drivers for the device. Your system is not recognizing the device because it doesn't know what it is. Go to the Palm support site and do a search for 'Treo 660 Drivers' or find the drivers on a CD that may have accompanied your Palm and use your 'install new hardware' feature in XP to get going.

A) Check that you've installed your Treo software properly
B) Check that you've got your USB software properly installed. I used to get this when my USB drivers were wrong.
