the reason your air condtioning uit smells is because you rarely use it. It is something that builds up moisture and then when it sits and gets hot, it creates mold. When you turn it on the moldy smell extracts into your home. I would suggest taken the unit aprt and hand washing it and then drying it and put it back together. Also if this is a central unit make sure you use clean filters, and spray them with lysol disinefectant spray. You may also spray right into the vent before turning it on to kill any bacteria.

THE FIRST answer is right you will need to clean or replace try spraying your filter with maybe frebreez or another spay you may like if that dose not work than i would be looking at a new filter because that would be the only thing i could think of for the reason your airconditiner may be causing your home to smell they do sell something that you hang on your filter but i don't know were you can get them it been a while since i have seen them but i am sure their still out their.

if all that dose not work then i hat say this but is their maybe something dead in yet take it to a repair shop and have them take a look.

Good luck hope this helps if not i am sure their will be others to help you.

Your getting mildew in the lower tray. A/C's are bacteria havens.
Firstly, make sure that it's draining properly. It should have a slight tilt downwards (the part hanging out the window should be 1" or so lower than the front)
Fill a pump sprayer with 1/4 bleach..3/4 water and spray liberally all around the interior of it
Clean the filter in a similiar solution
This should help

what do u mean by leftover water. Are u not discharing it out of the house. If you are letting it pool in a pan go to Lowes or HD and get a condinsation pump and get that water out. It is very unhealthy to breathe air that is full of mold and it sounds like your is very bad

Invite your girlfriend and her handy husband over for supper. Tell them you are worried there might be a mouse nest or dead animal lodged in your AC unit. Can the husband help you take it apart to have a look? Your unit needs cleaning!

Try cleaning/replacing the air filter, that should work.
