Ok there are a few things that can make your PC freeze, it can be caused by a faulty cpu cooling fan that is not doing its job correctly. It can be caused by spyware or viruses. It can be also caused if you have some applications that are using too much memory. Now you can try a few things, first if you have an antivirus software update its virus defenitions over the internet and do a complete scan of your pc, during the scan don't open any other applications and leave the pc alone to finish the scan, the virus scan should neutralize any viruses. If you don't have an antivirus try downloading AVG FREE from this website http://www.free-av.com/ it is a very good antivirus program and it is free. After you download it update it over the internet and do a complete scan. You can also download a great antispyware and addware program called Ad-Aware and get it updated and scan your pc this can removes annoying spyware and addware known to slow down a pc.You can download Ad-Aware Personal which is free for home users from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/. If none of these steps helps, which I think will solve your problem, you can and I would recomend it even if the above steps solve your problem, and that is download this great program called TuneUP Utilities 2006 from http://www.tune-up.com/download/ by double clicking on the download free trial version buton on that page. After you finish downloading it and installing it you will see two icons on your desktop, just double click on the one called 1-Click Maintenance and let it scan your pc for problems, after the scan is over click on fix, and voila all fixed, you can repeat this scan as much as you like. Trust me man follow everything I told you and your pc problems will be solved (if the problem is not of hardware origin), I am telling you all this out of experiance.

Yup, it's a virus, and spywares the one in charge. Now what you don't know is, AIM could be the case. I've scanned AIM and found 6 or 7 spyware in it. Still, there are options. You can uninstall AIM, use a anti-virus program to scan your computer and fix or delete the virus (Norton Anti-Virus, McAfree AntiSpyware, etc.NOTE: Keep these programs up-to-date. It's recommended so for future purposes, virues and spyware can be deleted faster and easier.) Or, if you downloaded anything before this problem occured, you may want to scan that. Now here's a easier way. If your using windows xp, you might find a program called "System Restore", using this, you can turn back to an earlier time when your computer was normal.(Start button, then go to all programs, accessories, system tools, then system restore) I think this is enough!

The freezing sounds like you do not have enough memory [Ram] for the programs. You did not say how much you have. In a fast computer with big programs you need at least one gig and more. To defrag, a thing that needs doing regularly, go to my computer, right click on C: and choose tools. You will find defrag, and other useful programs to get rid of and compress files, and check for disk errors and try to correct them. If you do not have a virus program I recommend Internet Security 2006 by Symantec. When you start to install it will check for viruses at once.

First off Remove and reinstall AIM or just leave it off completely.
Then download adaware, spybot and AVG (antivirus software)
These are all free programs. Run them one at a time and reboot if needed. These programs typically are pretty good, there are others but these work for me. If all else fails backup your documents and reload the machine. Personally I don't think you have a virus, I think windows took a dump and needs to be flushed.

If you can still access the internet with that computer, go to free.grisoft.com and getr the free AVG antivirus. If it is a virus, this should take care of it. If it is spyware or adware, you might want to go to lavasoft.com and get the free Adaware program and run it as well. MAKE SURE THE DEFINITION FILES ARE UP TO DATE or else these programs will not detect the latest viruses or worms.
