Hollywood's been doing remakes, before the current surge. If it's good, I don't mind the sequels too much, but I think along with the remakes, they need to ease-up on the superhero flicks, a bit. Not every comic book property deserves film treatment.

Sequels and remakes are done because Hollywood wants to make money quickly. You don't have to advertise as much for a remake because the product is already know. Also they like to dig films out and give them a modern look. (i.e., King Kong has been remade several times). Also film executives love sequels. If people love a character, then you got yourself a bonafide hit movie year in and out. Perfect example of that are the James Bond films.

What else is there? At least old movies are already written and producers can save a bundle on writers. Remember that producers have no brains. So the alternatives are things that are already written, like old movies, history and novels. Only once in a generation comes a writer that can come up with an original thought. Olson Weles in the 50s, Billy Wilder in the 60s, Paddy Chavewsky in the 70s, Woody Allen in the 80s, Quentin Tarantino in the 90s, and so on.

A lot of the sequels are because fans want more of the story. Studio big wigs want money so they support sequels and remakes! They tend to stick with what brings in the big bucks! I personally love the Sundance channel because there are movies that are original Not the big buck draws from the big studios. The only way to gt them over this is to quit going to the movies so they quit making money.

Yes by and large the hollywood movie studios have A)run out of ideas B)think retelling the same old story is safer than doing something new.
There are a few folks who try to do new stuff. Your Brad Birds and Joss Whedons.
People are just as stupid though. With tv good well scripted shows die out (Watching Ellie, Arrested Development) while the same old same gets emmy nominations (Adventures of Old Christine).

Yes. Plus, people try to "cash in" whenever they come across something really intriguing. And MOST of the time, the sequel is VERY disappointing. (For example, First Blood - the 1st Rambo movie - was actually really good. Movies have followed this trend ever since then.)

No - we have the idea of a sequel because of all the money the first one made! Look at Pirates of the Caribbean! 132 mil last weekend!

You know it is in the best interest of everyone...well, those doing the remaking anyway....to beat everything to death and get every last penny they can out of one idea.

No "we" have not, but Hollywood has. They are so busy telliing us about what a great value it is to see a movie in a theater for $10 a pop, and making those enticing "don't download/steal movies" ads that I guess all their creative juices are used up!
