You can eat *anything* you want unless you see that your baby is allergic to something in your diet. This isn't very common, but if it does happen to you, the most likely allergen by far is dairy products, so if you think the baby is reacting to something you are eating, cut *all* dairy (including "hidden dairy"--foods with ingredients like casein, whey, and anything with a "lact" in it) out of your diet for at least 2 weeks.

Other than dairy, the most common allergens are egg, wheat, and soy (and peanuts if you live in the US or if either parent is American). Beans other than soy and vegetables (other than corn and tomatoes) are *very* rarely a problem at all. Spicy foods are fine; in fact, research has shown that babies of mothers who eat garlic actually nurse *better*. And, keep in mind that Indian babies and Mexican babies all breastfeed!!

Drink if you are thirsty. Forcing liquids will *not* help you in any way, and might, in fact, cause you to produce less milk.

You don't have to avoid most drugs, either. Occasional drinks of alcohol are fine. If you smoke, it's better to quit, but if you're not going to quit, it's healthier for your baby if you smoke and breastfeed than to smoke and *not* breastfeed.

Take everything that people tell you with a grain of salt. Most foods, even taboo ones, are not a problem. When I first started breastfeeding I was out to avoid all the problem foods, but here's what I've been able to eat with NO problems!! : broccoli, cauliflower (even raw), cooked cabbage (I would avoid this raw though), all veggies, chocolate, all legumes, spicy foods. Everything has been fine. The only thing I've found my baby to be sensitive to in my diet has been wheat and dairy. I know, tough to phase out - but these are common allergens in babies (especially dairy) and can often be the reason a baby wakes so much at night (as they grow older). I cut back on wheat and dairy and my daughter suddenly was only waking up twice a night, instead of 5 or 6 times. That was enough for me! The only thing I would red-flag is excessive caffiene - but your baby will let you know.
Anyway, the most important thing to do is pay attention to your baby. If you eat a lot of broccoli, so what? It's good for you, lots of calcium and other minerals! Keep eating it! If baby develops a problem (colic or can't fall aleep) THEN look at what you're eating. For now, just make sure you're eating healthy food choices, lots of fruits and veggies, and LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER.

Certain things effect babies differently, but, after I had my first baby, I learned real quick that omelets with peppers and onions was not one of "her favorites", I mean, it gave her a tummy ache!! !! Our Pediatrician even verified the fact that "yes", certain foods do effect babies!

Some may say you can eat anything, but, I learned thats not true, it really depends on the baby, and I dont really think theres a specific "list", its like a trial & error thing, because while some foods might effect one baby, the same ones may not effect another.

So good luck with that, and its nice to know there are still moms out there who are choosing the natural & healthier way to start off a babies little life.

I just finished breastfeeding after 10 months of it. I wouldnt eat anything that gives you gas....broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, beans. Also, if you drink a lot of caffeine it will keep the baby awake. Not too much spicy food as it can upset the baby's tummy. Basically just remember that a little bit of everything you eat passes through your milk to the baby.

You have to experiment with what your baby will tolerate. I know my son would not tolerate gassy foods like cauliflower, cabbage, beans and brussel sprouts. Sometimes foods with strong flavors he didn't like well either, such as tuna and fish. Each baby is differetn - but of course stay away from alcohol and drugs that of course would have a bad impact on your baby. Drinks LOTS of Water!

Gassy foods like cabbage, and beans, or things like garlic and onions. Limit intake of chocolate and caffiene. Just remember, what u eat, baby eats as well!! Be encouraged! Don't give up. It takes trial and error believe me!

ur allowed to eat anything when ur nursing but im sure u asked that question as in how to keep your baby healthy- kind of way.
my mom always tells me that i dont have any allergies cuz she (painfully) stayed away from all animal-related foods and unorganic stuff. she didnt eat meat, sushi, bread with the stuff in it to make it last longer, etc etc. she said she just ate stuff from whole foods and stuff. mmmm expensive. ofcourse, my mom is one of the most paranoid moms in the world so im sure u dont have to cut out EVERY poultry etc from your diet but im sure u kno alcohol, drugs, and smoking isnt healthy cuz it pollutes the milk you're nursing or something. i forgot the scientific way of saying it but u know what i mean! oh and dont eat any artificial stuff.
ahh i dont know how mom coped with it! haha ok good luck with your kid

Stay away from more than 1 alcoholic drink a day, too much caffeine, and some medications. Unless your baby is gassy or has allergies, than that is it!

I've heard that you should avoid things that give you gas like beans, cabbage etc.

A lot of alcohol wouldn't do the baby any good either.

Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate) if your baby has any trouble sleeping.
