First off, indie is not a specific kind of music. People like saying "I listen to indie music" because it makes them feel special and unique. Indie literally means independant, which is bascially any band not signed to one of the five major record labels. You could have a rap group, a rock group, a folk singing group, and as long as you belong to a small record label or none at all, you could be labelled indie.

Emo music is characterized by more acoustic guitar. Electric guitar riffs are usually limited to melodies with little distortion (as opposed to hard-lining power chords). Nowadays the vocals tend to be more 'whiny' and focus on lost love, mean parents, and other teenage angst issues.

Skater rock is more of your classic punk, with heavy electric guitar chords and lots of drums. Think Ramones, then add in some modern themes. More anti-establishment lyrics than anti-parents.

emo is a term that people of the music scene use as an insult usually. I have not seen many bands that call themselves straight emo. If you wanna know the history of emo, read Nothing Feels Good by Andy Greenwald. It's very interesting if you are interested in the music scene at all. Indie is more grassroots than anything else. If the band is big and called indie it's because they started somewhere small first. Some would consider death cab indie (and some wouldn't because they are rather large now) but the reason being is because the lyrics are really thought through, they try to get a message across and the music itself is not just slapped together. The people of the indie scene are concerned with the art and the presentation of their craft. The music, the video, the way they look, they way the people perceive their music.. it all comes together. The Indie scene is the one that comes out with the low budget films and they low budget recordings and then gets their stuff talked about. As far as skater rock goes, I really don't know, I haven't heard that term. I have only heard of the people who are skaters that listen to rock. The music they listen to is more of the old stuff usually or more of the actual straight up rock. No extra labels needed. Honestly all the subcategories mix and meld into one another to where even those in the music scene can't define exactly what it is because it means something different to each person. I hate to be all vague, but really you just have to experience the concerts or shows of each type to get a feel for it all.

Rap music has sub-categories like, Gangsta rap, Hardcore rap, Old school rap, Rap metal, New school rap, Second wave rap, South side rap, Bass rap, Alternative rap, Freestyle rap, Southern rap, Dirty South, Crunk-style rap, etc, etc... Gangsta rap or a Gangsta rapper is an artist describing his past or the lifestyle he is living as a gangster / former-gangster with his lyrics. Other forms of rap may be similar, but rap doesn't have to be about describing how you're going to kill someone, Hell, there's even Gospel rap which I forgot to mention in the above list.
