Anti-American sentiments have always existed, from the early 1700's and into the foreseeable future. The U.S. is the world's "Gulliver", and no matter how much we do or don't do...we will always be criticized for everything going on around the world.
To start, some of our past foreign-policies have proved hypocritical i.e. promoting democracy world-wide, but if it's a democracy that doesn't support U.S. views then we'll support the facist dictator instead (South America).
Also, many of our foreign-aid packages comes with strings attached, making it less appealing to accept or difficult due to public perception; and often the money does not "trickle-down" to those who need it most (Africa).
Finally, the Middle-East is the most dangerous source of Anti-American sentiments...and probably the most difficult to repair. Our strong alliance with Israel will keep it that way, the U.S. and Israel are seen as common enemies who are threats to their way of life ...that will not change in their perception unless we suddenly become a friend to Islamic nations such as Iran.
Of course, the mass media outlets in Europe, South America, Middle-East (Al-Jazeera), and Asia are all biased and certainly contain Anti-American articles, which will never help our image.
The only way we can help send a 'better image of America in the world' is to help those in need, not through aid from our government, but through individual efforts...as we have seen with those who helped during 9/11, Tsunami, Earthquakes, and Hurricane Katrina, along with the two richest people in the world, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet donating their money, time, and energy to help the least fortunate in the world. These acts of compassion to help others, i think, is the only thing we can do to help those who hate us, start to admire u.s.

Cut 25% of the Military Budget and invest ALL OF IT in the Education Budget. Always, always ensure you have a strong foundation before commencing any building project, whether physical or metaphorical. The world sees the USA as a military giant who believes in the motto (Shoot first and ask questions later). This may not be true, but it is the picture being portrayed. The world knows a lot more about America than America knows about the world (referring to the general public) and investing large amounts into your Education budget will do wonders for your Public Relations. The positive side effect of this action will be a more educated individual in general that cares more about what is happening around the world compared to the stereotype that can't name the capital of most countries outside of the US. Even though the US government and large organizations invest millions in charity and poverty eradication, etc. the world notices the ignorance of the everyday person on the street and think to themselves, how can a country care about other countries and cultures if their citizens can't even name 5 other continents of by heart.

There's a few inconsistencies here. America is supposed to send money to the UN, we frequently underfund our responsibility for bargaining power.
For the immigrants, it is incredibly difficult to come to America legally if you are not exceptional in some way (think pro athlete or in a much needed profession like nursing where we take doctors from the Phillipines and make them nurses here).
However, we also do a lot of good stuff in the world. I think the biggest problems for us are in our foreign policies. We have frequently supported repressive regimes throughout the world for short term political reasons. For example: we supported the Shah in Iran which eventually lead to the Islamic Revolution there. We currently support the house of Saud in Saudi Arabia. We talk about promoting democracy and freedom, but our actions frequently speak otherwise. This is one major reason we are hated by many people in the world.

See, when you are the lone super-power in the world, then you are bound to be hated by many people. Your lifestyle is in utter contrast to the ultra-conservative middle-east & semi-conservative south asian countries.
I'm not an American , but an Indian. I'm also an unbashed admirer of the United States. I've had business relations with many Americans & I've also borne racism but I still admire the attitude of the Americans whom i was able to conduct my business minus the racism. I've seen how particular they are about rules & how the rules go for a toss in India.
America is one of the most hated countries in the world but it is more because of being thelone super power in the globe. And I believe, in the jungle the Lion rules. I supported the attack on Taliban but not on Iraq. You cannot & you need not communicate with the entire world saying that " we are nice people." Hell, The States is still the dream destination of half the globe. Outside the US or atleast in South-Asia , having a job or a business in the US is the ultimate status symbol. But it is really difficult to migrate to US now, i've tried & failed.
You Americans are also not at fault if the leaders of other countries bend over backwards to please you. Some fault lies with us too for having been so boot-licking to the US presidents that your leaders have become arrogant in matters pertaining developing countries like India. I am also against the sanctions US imposed on India following our nuclear tests or the case of the WMDs in Iraq, when the world knows you have enough baggage to nuke the entire Solar system!!!!. But overall, for me your image is not like you are the most hated country in the world, You have only occupied the most enviable position in global politics & that too, for such a long time. So with that position, there comes a lot of disagreements some hate & jealousy & politics as an add-on.

America should remove its hypocritical behaviour and double standard attitude. To name a microscopic few,
1. Linking aids to poor nations with contracts splashed with manipulative accountabilities.
2. Exceedingly lopsided Middle East policy.
3. Refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Global warming is much more dangerous than Sadam Hussein.
4. All the bleatings on other countries breaking international law while disregarding world opinion and unilaterally invaded Iraq.
5. Many many more.

It would help if our government didn't act like it had a right to rule the world. I'm curious as to why, if we demand other countries get rid of their weapons of mass destruction, we aren't forced to do the same thing? Many Americans act like no other culture is as good as ours when they go to different countries, which doesn't foster good relationships with people in those countries. America is one of the richest nations in the world, and yes, we do give money to other countries. However, we don't give enough in comparison to the mega-trillions that we do earn. I would say the main reason is because of our foreign military policies though.

That's simple right now we are king of the hill and others want to knock us down. Plus the very fact that we help a country makes us an enemy of its enemy. For example the middle east hates us because we helped Israel and they know that they couldn't possibly stand up to us militarily so they a bunch of terrorist groups formed from the hated that they naturally gained. The scarier thing is with the problem between China and Taiwan. China probably secretly hates us because we are what stands between them and finally completing their nation. Right now they hate us because all around the world we're seen as the biggest threat. It also doesn't help that because of our own bipartisan nature the nation trashes on itself. For example if you try and look for the most anti-American themes just look and some of the stuff our democrats are doing. Were so powerful that we've begun to attack ourselves, sad ain' it.

We will always have countries that will never like us. It is a part of life. When you are the lone super power in the world - that is reason enough to hate you.

We need to get Bush out of office. Reelecting the guy told the world that we supported him and what he was doing. This turned people's hatred of our government into hatred of our people. We need to stop destroying Iraq too. That certainly isn't making us more popular.

What's your source? A couple of underhanded Frenchmen? If you really want to be accepted by all those resentful people, you must become second rate, as they are. I'm more of the opinion that they can go piss up a rope.
