You just have to make up your mind that if you really want to part with stuff, you are going to have to get organized. First, I think that it really helps to bring in someone who isn't a fellow pack rat and let them help you start sorting through things. Next you will want to start with areas that haven't been touched in a while, like closets. If you can get closets cleared out successfully, it will help motivate you to move on to other areas. Decide what you would most likely not ever give up and separate those things from the things that you really know you could do without. Make Goodwill stacks, throw away stacks, keeper stacks, and other things to deal with later. You really have to attack it all at once while you still have some motivation or when the feeling passes, you will be left sitting in a big mess. Play music, something to clean to, but turn off the TV. The saying goes that if you haven't used it in a year, get rid of it... sometimes I extend it to 2 years, but the reality is, if I have never used an item, I most likely never will, so dump it. When you start to have space again and you see things looking more organized, it really helps push you through the last leg. It also helps to buy things like extra shelves and shoe racks and such to help you decide what stays and what goes on the shelf. I hope this helps from one pack rat in recovery to another.

Designate an out of the way place for all your packrat items. When nothing else fits in the place, something in there has to go.

Anything that is out of sight, in the dark and covered with dust...you obviously don't need since you haven't used it in forever. You might consider having a friend come through and toss everything that fits that description as its very hard sometimes for people to part with stuff they've had for awhile...and for some reason the longer you have it and the less you use it the harder it is to part with.

If you do it yourself, you'll want to keep everything. The only way to get rid of stuff is to get someone else to toss it out. Go through the stuff and pick out your "prize posessions". Then get someone else- friend, family to sort & toss the rest.

Move one time and you'll be cured.
Seriously, ask yourself if you've used certain items in the last year (or two). If not, you probably don't need it.
