It all depends on the type of person you are, not so much the books you have read in the past. Broaden your horizons; don't be the average American and read all 6 Harry Potters to consider yourself well-rounded. Honestly, go to your local library, tell them what you are into, and ask for a suggestion. Unless you get the crotchety old octogenarian that has been working there since books have been written, you can usually find someone to help you out.

My person picks, however, are these:

God's Debris by Scott Adams (yes, i know, the creator of Dilbert, but trust me on this one... you can download it at www.dilbert.com; definitely worth it)

Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut; the accounts of Billy Pilgrim, an everyday man who gets "unstuck in time", as Vonnegut describes it. Hard to follow, but easy to enjoy.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson; explores the drug culture after the Great San Franciscan Acid Wave of the late 60's and demonstrates great writing technique of "gonzo journalism". Definitely my top pick.

And for your bathroom reading, might I suggest "Why Do Men Have Nipples? And other questions you could only ask after your third martini" by Mark Leyner, PhD and Dr. Billy Goldberg. It never gets old.

Hope I could help a little bit!

Try the three sisters trillogy by Nora Roberts, excellent, very witchy. Also try Diana Gabaldon's books, she did 4 in a series, some of the names of them are Breath of Snow and Ashes, this is the latest one, also The Drums of Autumn, The Voyager, and I can't remember the rest right now. I have all of them at home and have read them numerous times. They are about this lady that accidentally goes back in time by getting too close to the rock formation Stonehenge. She ends up in Scotland and meets this hunky (of course) Scott, I won't give the rest away. These are stay-up-till-4am readers, you won't be able to put them down!

Cell by Stephen King or Prey by Michael Crichton. Just finished reading both and I found them to be real page turners especially Cell, it's a page turner from page one! Excellent story.

Read 1984, if you can handle the first three chapters of introduction and the part where the guy reads a book.

"Memorial Day" by author Vince Flynn.

Very topical ... very thought-provoking ... and very entertaining.

In fact, read his entire series of novels ... starting from the first one. You will probably get hooked on him. He fictionalizes real-life possibilities ... and leads you through solutions you will likely think are either in the works or inevitable.

Great author.
