In the National League the pitcher on the team, bats in the lineup. In the American League they did away with that back in the 70's I think and replaced the pitcher with a designated hitter.

A DH in baseball is used in American League ballparks ONLY. The DH does NOT have to hit for the pitcher...it's just a player, who does not play in the field (he only hits), who hits for one of the other positions on the team.
A DH (99.99%) hits for the pitcher. He is usually a guy that can hit a ton, but has trouble playing a position (i.e.- David Ortiz or Edgar Martinez, Frank Thomas)
But a DH does not have to hit for the pitcher...he just usually does.

In the American League, it's the guy who bats in place of the pitcher, and doesn't play in the field on defense.
