yes, i believe zinedine zidane is a hero bcoz he didnt giv up his pride for sport. he has proven that he is a footballer to be remembered as a legend and not as the-guy-who-got-a-red-card-on-his-last-match
if i was zidane and that materazzi said something offensive to me, i wouldve thrown him out of the pitch. wat a pity italians won bcoz of an unfair play. and italian supporters, dont take this as an insult. im just telling the truth and saying what i hav in mind.
it was a gloryless way to win the title. "italians won the world cup because they had a man advantage. however, they still couldnt score after zinedine zidane, france's soccer legend, was sent off due to a head butt to materazzi for insulting him."
i still believe france shouldve won. i wasnt rooting for france actually, bcoz i was supporting PORTUGAL. but france has proven that they are the best, knocked out spain, portugal, and brazil!
ZIDANE WILL BE REMEMBERED AS A SOCCER LEGEND. i can assure u that.

btw, zidane is known as a very quiet, and shy player compared to others. so wat materazzi hav said mightve provoked zidane's last nerve.

Spain wasn't that great of a team -- they scored many goals in the group play, but they played easy teams, except for Ukraine. They were completely lost in that game against France. France crashed them completely.
Brazil had many champions, but they couldn't bring their individual talents into the group. Not really good as a team. They couldn't even score one goal against France, and Italy did!!!
Portugal... very controversial games (from Holland onwards) but still, the only team i would give credit to out of these three.
At least Italy played better in the group play (except for the game against the USA). Ukraine was no Brazil, but Portugal was no Germany either.
They were more or less even, but Italy had more group spirit.
Zidane a hero? A selfish hero maybe. Thinking about his own pride, while his team was needing him -- because those guys do depend on him to score as much as the Italians depend on Cannavaro not to be scored against.

Agree, it is clear on the tape that Materazzi purposely provoked Zidane. And personally, I feel that the referee is not on France's side. Italy won the cup due to someone else's penalty kick mistake, so is Italy's winning a mistake win? I just feel that Italy is lucky. But still, Zidane will always be remembered as a soccer legend, we don't need this World Cup to prove that!
ZIDANE THE HERO!!!

If you know anything about soccer, then you'd know that provocation is part of the game. You talk to your rivals to distract them from the game, get them to react, whatever works to get an edge. Materazzi was very smart. Zidane in the other hand fell for this old trick. You want to say that Italy;s win is gloryless, whatever, it is a win. Italy is the world champions and nothing you say will change that. France missed the boat, Portugal missed the boat and Portugal showed that they are not a soccer powerhouse.

Tony c - you are retarded for saying such a thing. how can you say that?? He has been labelled the greatest player of the last 20 years numerous time by basically everyone in the football world. He has won every trophy possible to be won, and the fact that he got the Golden Ball award after what he did proves that even FIFA decided to overlook that one act and judge him on his performance - which was stunning. Zidane is by far the best footballer the world has seen since the 1980s, a player gifted with talent out of this world. He was a great captain for France, a huge asset for Real Madrid and embodied all that the football world stood for. He was praised by the greatest football players including Pele, Beckenbauer and Platini, and gave the french people joy and passion for the game throughout his career. It was because of him that France made it to the final this time, and for a man of 34 years, that is very impressive. No matter how bad his actions were in the final of this world cup, anybody who truly loves football would overlook his action, and praise him for his true talents, that is his pinpoint shots on goal, precision passing, great captaincy and absolutely exceptional dribbling and footwork - a true legend of the game. Sorry he had to go out like that, and its a sad ending for such a great display by France and Zidane, but it doesnt mean we should look down on him and forget how much he has contributed to the beautiful game

ZIDANE WILL BE REMEMBERED AS A COWARD AND A BLACK MARK ON FRANCE FOREVER. What a poor sport and a violent scumbag. France couldn't score a real goal in the semi-finals or finals. They were twice awarded a penalty kick in both games that were not justified and the whole world knows it. The idiot that said Italy won because of a man advantage is simply an ignorant fool who lacks any knowledge of soccer and must be a supporter of violence and poor sportsmanship that Zidane is now a poster boy of. All of Zidane greatness was washed away with the headbutt. Zidane the scumbag is all that is left.

Materazzi's words might have tripped the last nerve that Zidane had under that pressure. He got a breakdown of his self-control and head-butted him. I know that he did this 3 times in 8 years, but he is still a player with huge achievements.
After all, no ordinary player has won the UEFA Cup, the Champions' League, the European Supercup, the European Championshp, the World Cup and so on....

You asked a question and you answer it yourself already!!
Anyway, I would have to say I agreed with you.
At least, the France did displayed that they are the stronger team and they could have won, of course no one will really know. As for the Italian, their hero is Materazzi, whatever he said to Zidane won them the World Cup.
Italian won a World Cup, not of football, but of words.

oh come on people! they had a one man advantage for very little time. You can't say that they didn't score with one man less. It's not like the Italy/Australia game where Australia had the advantage for practically a whole game (ahem..that's just me bugging my Australian bf)
anyhow, Italy won fair and square, the rules are the same for everyone. Yes it would have been better if it haden't gone with a shoot out, but if France had won, (or any other team) it was still a shoot-out, so what's the problem?
