ever since i as little i suffered from canker sores...they are very painful. When I was younger they were few and far between now that I am older they are more frequent and sometimes I will have more than one. I went to my doctors for this numerous times while growing up and they always just gave me stuff for the pain never anything that can help it go away. Now I realize that peroxide is really the only thing that works (but takes awhile) so I wash my mouth out with a 50/50 solution of peroxide. Is there anything anyone has tried that really works and helps them go away quicker and stay away longer. My doctor said its in the herpes family but that I dont have herpes... she confused me ... anyone know about this??

This isn't considered herpes in the sense that you think of herpes. It's not an STD that your doctor is referring to, it's simply a herpes virus. Just a virus, nothing more. By saying that it is a herpes virus means that it will go away and come back. It's always there, but not always visible - that is a characteristic of herpes, but not the herpes you are thinking of. As far as a remedy, the only remedy I have heard of for this is antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. I think that is the most effective and quickest. As far as home remedies go, for some reason I am thinking that salt water will do the trick. Salt water heals sores and wounds and even clears up your face (if you notice, your face is probably clearer after you go to the beach).

There is no actual cure for this because, like I said, it's always there but not always visible. The only thing you can do is treat the symptoms, because unfortunately you can't stop these sores from coming back.

Cold sores (aka canker sores) actually are a form of Herpes. Just so you know. But it's nothing serious and is completely different than genital herpes.

Go to any drugstore (CVS, Walgreen's, etc). They have plenty of stuff for cold sores that make them clear up faster. Unfortunately, once you start getting cold sores, you will continue to get them periodically for the rest of your life. It's incurable but completely treatable. Even if herpes doesn't run in your family, you could have contracted it from anywhere. Even someone that kissed you as a baby could have passed it on to you. Some people don't show signs at all up to 15 years after exposure!

Do not use peroxide if it is bleeding at all. If peroxide gets underneath your skin or into your blood stream, it can cause an extremely bad infection and even lead to Gangrene (where the skin just dies). Peroxide can also take the protective enamal off your teeth. So be careful with it; it's a lot stronger than many people realize. Stick to over-the-counter or prescription meds.

Also be aware that you can spread herpes even if you're not showing any signs. Although cold sores usually aren't spread unless you ARE showing signs. So keep the area clean at all times and treated whenever you feel a sore or sense one coming.

It is a type of herpes, but not the one that appears on your genitals.

And there is no cure for herpes.
