Since Atheists do not believe in God, what do you think happens to you when you die? I am honestley curious about your ideas of an "after life" etc... (or lack there of) Please be as specific as possible.

There is no "soul," no "afterlife," no "heaven," no "hell."

With that out of the way, you must realize that it is not so gloomy as it seems. When someone dies, whether they are buried or cremated, they return to the environment as part of the Carbon Cycle. Our deceased loved ones are in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. They nourish us just as their loved ones nourished them.

Tanya, what was life like for you in the 1820s

Like nothing. You weren't around in those times so you have no recollection of the 1820s or the 1920s or 300 bc or 6,000 years ago. Why? You just did not exist

This is what Atheists believe, that you only have a short time in this world and after that you will cease to exist.

You might think this is depressing, but I think it quite comforting in a strange sort of way. Like Freddy Mercury sang, "who wants to live forever!!".

As someone who doesn't believe in the traditional God, I have no particular belief in disembodied existence. I don't think anything happens after you die. But that does not frighten me. Before I existed there was a whole lot of nothingness, but then I was... so my death may not be the end of all things.

However if somehow I were to live again, I don't think "I" would be the same.

I've come to believe that "I" is not so important.

I practice Buddhism in daily life. But I do not need a God to believe in kindness to others...
nor do I have to believe that I will live forever, and that that will be the reward for doing good.

There is no mystery to this since there is no 'you' that survives death. Asking what happens to you when you die is just a mistake in language usage that *assumes* you are composed of something beyond your body. But there is absolutely no rational basis or evidence for this whatsoever - indeed all the evidence clearly indicates that death is it: The End.
What we each feel as 'me' is just the coherent persistence of a mental construct that arises from chemical processes in the brain. Once the brain shuts down, the mental construct - the 'you' - simply is no more.
Of course it is much more comforting to believe in something like a soul that survives death but that is just a fantasy of wish-fulfillment. Sad, but true.

Well, I believe your body physically decomposes and all mental function ceases completely. I try not to make assumptions about the continuation of my spiritual self for two reasons. First, as an application of Occam's razor - it seems foolish to conclude that there is an afterlife when we have no emperical evidence. Second, it's a productive exercise in humility, a quality that many people, Christian and otherwise, I have spoken to seem to lack in abundance.

When you die there is nothing. Atheists believe only in the physical life, no afterlife, no heaven, no hell, no meeting of the spirits or souls after death......that's it. You aren't going to see your mom or your dog in heaven, it simply doesn't exist. The idea of an afterlife is only to comfort those who are too afraid to confront the reality that when your neurons stop firing and the cellular physical body dies....you are dead....and that's it.

Well, I would imagine an atheist would believe that there's nothing after. Existence and consciousness ends. The end. There is nothing to experience.

You cease to exist. Ever had a sleep without dreams? That's what death is.

You are either consumed by maggots and other nasty bugs, or you get burned in a large fire. I want the barbecue myself.
