Not sure about the function keys but you can use keys to open up programs such as Word, or any other program installed.
If you want to do that,
1. go to the start menu and find the program and right click on it
2. Go to properties
3. Under the Shortcut Key tab type a letter i.e. W for word, E for Excel etc.
4. This will automatically put an alt + shift or and control + shift in front of the letter you designated.
5. Click on when finished.

Now whenever you want to start that program instead of hunting it down in the start menu you can just hit the alt + shift and the letter and that program will start. If this isn't what you wanted then I wish you the best of luck finding your answer.

you need a shortcut on the desktop to do this.

Say you want to open a program.
1. put a shortcut to the program on th desktop.
2. right-click on the shortcut. go to properties.
3. pick the shortcut keys you want to use and hold them down in the box next to 'shortcut key'.

done.

you'll have to go with a control or shift key to make it work though.
