Sudden death or golden goal was: After the regulatory 90 minutes both teams would play up to 30 minutes of extra time (two 15 min. halves) and if during that time a team scored a goal that would be the end of the match. It didn't work well because both teams would play too defensively and it was taken out of major competition.

After 5 penalty kicks, if they remain tied, the same rotations keep shooting until one team scores and the other misses.

If the first player misses, the other one can finish the other team off by scoring. If the first player scores, then the other is forced to score to keep himself an his team in the game.

The most ridiculous occasion on which this was put up was at the African Nations' Cup, in January, when Ivory Coast defeated Cameroon 12-11 in the penalty shootout. The man to miss from Cameroon was the great Samuel Eto'o from FC Barcelona, while Didier Drogba from the Ivory Coast (plays at Chelsea London) finished off the shootout.

I am not from Africa!!
I just happened to see that on Eurosport.
