OK, You need to follow some instructions here. The £ symbol is not on the keyboard – it is in the software. It’s not obvious. These instructions are for Microsoft systems, not Apple. (They may be similar)

1) Identify what font you are using: example- I am using “ARIAL” right now.

2) Go to your “Start” menu. Under Programs, choose the “Accessories” Folder. Under “Accessories”, choose the Folder “System Tools”, Under “System Tools”, choose little program called “Character Map”

3) In “Character Map”, at the top, you see a pull-down menu for fonts. Choose the font you are working with, In this example, “Arial”.

4) You will see a map of all the characters and symbols encoded for “Arial” font – You will see many. Even other languages. What you want is near the top. You will see the “Pound” sign (£) on the 3rd Column from the Right side.

5) Activate this £ symbol by “clicking” it – it will grow larger. At the bottom of “Character Map” you will see a button “Select”. Select it. Then choose button “Copy”.

6) The £ can now simply be pasted into our document where you needed it.

Done!

It's not on the keyboard per se. Make sure "num lock" is on. Then while holding down the ALT key, type "0163" on the keypad on the right (not the line of numbers above the letters) and then let go of ALT. (that's easiest and most efficient way). £

You can also try typing "& pound ;" (without the spaces) too. That works on many forums and other webpages. Or you can always do it the old-fashioned way of "insert symbol" and then finding it in the list in Word (you can then copy and paste it whereever you want).

I usually just use the ALT codes myself. I have most of the commonly used ones memorized (like for making spanish accent marks). Although PolyMath72's answer works too. I didn't know about that one.

PS: Don't listen to Michal C. He's obviously never had to write a history paper about England or anything else where a pound symbol might be required...

There isn't one. That is why it is an American keyboard. If you want a pound sign, get a British keyboard!

I think you have to insert it as a symbol...say in a word application, you should use the tool bar command "insert", then hit "symbol", then you should find it in the list of symbols offered.
