a MP3 Player is a generic term for ANYTHING that can play MP3 files as Music, this could be an iPod your computer, car or home sound system or even these silly £25 things from tesco that break in 4 weeks and sound awful

an iPod is a High Quality MP3 (and Video as well) player from Apple that uses a hard disk to contain 1000 to 50,000 MP3 files and plays them though a menu system that is very well made incredibly easy to use and reliable

an ipod is an mp3 player. the only difference is that ipod sometimes uses the flash memory(from 512 to 4 gb) and other times the harddisc based storage(upto 60 GB). the reason for Ipods phenominal success is its design and its operation. it is a very cool thing to have, and a lot of other industy are trying to integrate this Mp3 player into their products. eg aree shoes, and jeans and jackets. Bose has come out with a special speaker for the ipod, and there are car systems that accept ipods as music systems. so this is why the ipod has been enjoying this distincition.

further, unlike other mp3 players that actually play the songs in the format that we are used to, to play it in lets say winamp or media player... the ipod software itunes, converts it to an copyrighted format called ACC before storing them. and further the songs once they are stored in the ipod cannot be accessed with out the itunes, for then the titles and all related info is garbage!!

Other than $100 and the ability to play your downloads on anything else but an Apple product...
MP3 players are often solid state (no moving parts), using chip-based memory to store songs (like a USB thumb-drive) iPods (except iPodShuffle) use minature internal hard drives to store songs.
At this point in time, mini hard drives store more songs per cubic millimeter than memory does, therfore iPods can hold lots of songs.
I think anything that has moving parts - especially on a product that you carry around with you - is bound to fail sooner than electronic memory chips.
