802.11b and 802.11g are different standards for wireless connections. The "b" standard was created first, and can transfer file up to a speed of 11mps. The "g" came a year later and can transfer files up to 54mps (about five times after.) I remember it as "b is bad and g is good".

If you have a "g" router and a "b" card, you will transfer at the "b" speed of 11mps. (Same if you had a "b" router and a "g" card. Always goes with the lowest speed).

If you want to increase the speed of your wireless connection, you should update to a "g" card for the wireless

Both are different standards for wireless. B is the older one at a slower speed(round about 1Mbps(bits per sec)) whereas G is quite a lot faster. Of course G is backwards compatible with B but as mentioned by others you would not get the speed benefit.

"b" is a slower speed rate and is NOT compatible with "g" devices

however "g" devices are backwards compatible

so if you have a G router but a B card you'll be ok.. your device will transmit at the speeds maximum to your card..
it's usially a good bet to get a b/g router even if you have a b card...

Speed. Most g-routers are back-compatible with b.
