Is it the Service engine soon light or the Check Engine Light I have a 2004 grand am with the same engine the Service engine soon light means you need to take you car in for service OIL Change, Air Filter and have you Oil change monitor reset. If it is your check engine light you have a code store in you computer that needs to be checked out.

Yeah, autozone WILL check the light and code for free, and even clear it if you want. Depending on what the code is, it could be a silly one time things that you may want to clear. If there is an actual problem, it will come back on.
As far as which types of check engine light are more serious. If it stays on, it's a routine thing, if it is flashing on and off quickly, it means get it serviced right away.

Have your vehicle scanned by a professional auto technician, DO NOT HAVE IT DONE BY A PARTS STORE. They are not technicians if they were they would have a higher paying job in an auto repair shop. The code a scanner gives does not mean that is the problem, it has to be diagnosed.

Chances are that it is an emissions related problem. The OBD-II may be reading a bad catalytic converter...or an O2 sensor may be malfunctioning.
go to an Autozone, if you have one, and they will run a diagnostic on your car for free. Most autoparts stores should be able to do that for you.

on my geo tracker, the light came on at 80,000 miles, just as a precaution.... but i had it checked anyway, and that was the only way to turn the light off. but if you have a haynes automotive book for your car, ( i did for my tracker) it told me how to use jumper wires to test the thing myself, You need two people to do it, one to test it, , and one to read the flashes on your dash panel, a certain number of flashes will tell you what the problem is, ( count the flashes and then look in the book for the code)

sixty is rather conservative, there are numerous sensors that if they receive a particular message from the engine (or combination of messages), they tell the computer to display the service engine soon light.
