I've always wondered why that is... If a woman got engaged first and then got married, shouldn't the rings be worn in that order? I think that the engagement ring is the promise of love, faithfulness and life partnership which is then sealed with a band in marriage. When did this reversal happen? Is this a religious thing? Somehow I don't remenber this being discussed in Sunday school or in church...

the reason people wear the engagement ring on the outside because some women do not want to remove the wedding band and in life sometimes you cant always keep the engagement ring on so thats why it on the outside so the band isnt removed to take the engaement ring off

Wedding ring is always worn closest to the heart, and supposedly the vein that runs through the ring finger on the left hand leads directly to the heart.

You should wear your wedding ring first, to symbolize that your marriage is close to your heart. Then the engagement ring goes on second as an outward sign of your husbands love for you before you were married

The vein from that finger runs to the heart, so I've heard, so naturally you'd want that before your eng ring.. the eng ring is to let people know that you're committed to each other even before the wedding. your wedding band is the most important one and takes precedence over any other ring.

I think its just more ascetically balanced with the wedding ring on first then the engagement ring . but you are right it probably should be the other way around, Id like to know also.

My mom always said it was because the wedding ring was susposed to be closer to the heart - so it was worn inside. That's not a scientific answer, but Moms usually know best.

The reason for the wedding band being first is this: Theres a vein in that finger that runs straight to your heart and in order to keep your vows closer to your heart you should wear the wedding band first.
