The BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/lifeonmars/series2.shtml) says
"Filming on the new series starts in Manchester in April 2006 and continues until September. The show will be shown on BBC ONE in 2007, although an exact transmission date will not be decided upon until around the time of broadcast. "

All i know is that it will be on in early 2007. I thought the series was great too so i will be watching it next year.

Not sure when it will be on tv but think they are filming the next series now
