I have a computer I wish to set up and it runs extremely slow. It's will run WinXp and has 1GB of RAM and an 80gb hard drive. I am installing WinXP and it has taken 4 hours to do 20 mins of installing. My guess is my Pentium 3 chip or the WD Caviar 80gb Hard drive is damaged. Is there a test I can run to see is that or something else?

First of all, you don't have any trojans if you're doing a fresh install. Good answer there smart guy.

Pentium 3 is going to run XP slowly. No getting around it. Definitely check out the hardware though. Can't hurt anything. But if everything is still looking like it works, then make sure you wipe out your existing partition and re-format your harddrive before you install XP again.

You can run a stress test on your PC... Some Motherboard manufacturer provides utilities to test your system...

Or you can google, System Stress Test softwares and download 3rd party programs...

Examples.
Ontrak Fix-it
Norton Performance Test

Perhaps its not damaged, perhaps its just old parts that don't run XP real well. Pentium 3 is old.

Just run checkdisk.exe - all PC's come with it and you would be jeoppardizing your system to use one of the online PC scans because you are giving them intimate access to your computer.

Maybe the problem is the speed of your CD drive.

Computer Slow

Download and then run startup.exe at:

http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......

Can't live without it and windows...

Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.

Other things to try:

1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)
