He used to articulate few words like mama , dada and ata but stopped 3 months ago, a day after he recieved his 6 months immunizations. Might be just a coincidence, but since that day his only way of comunicating is screaming or crying.
We talk to him, we are reading, listening and singing to him every day so we try to engage him as much as we can. I talked to the pediatrician , but she does not seem concerned at all because our son reached all his other developmental milestones in time.
Any idea what is wrong with our son and what can we do to help him with the speech development?

Relax and give it alittle more time. At six months babies switch from social development( smiles, coos, babbling, etc.) to large motor development. In some cases,( this happened with my children and nieces/nephews) language will take a backseat to motor development. If your baby was 2yrs old, then I would be worried. Once he has mastered walking his language skills should return and develop in leaps and bounds. By the time he is 2 he should have a vocabulary of about 200 words. But this is an estimate.... no two babies develop at the same rate. If at that time you are still concerned, consult a speech pathologist. The screaming and crying is simple frustration borne of the inability to accomplish his goals and communicate his needs.

It's probably just a temporary thing, like partial hearing loss from the immunization. Get it checked if it goes for more than 2-3 days though.

Another thing to help with speech development at that age is if you have been speaking "baby talk" to him, stop. You don't mention how you speak to him. If you don't and others around him don't speak in that way to him, then just continue speaking to him in the same manner that you would speak to him if he were older.
Some parents don't do this, and wonder why their child has speech problems. But I'm sure you're not one of those parents, because your question is stated in such an articulate way, and it's a normal concern. Give it a little time, and if the problem persists, take him back to the Docter to get his hearing checked. We can't speak well, if we can't hear well, and at that stage of speech development, it shouldn't be taken lightly.

While the timing may seem scary, the immunizations probably have nothing to do with it. Kids often regress. My son also took a break from speaking. We were worried until our pediatrician (father of 4) asked if we were responding to the screaming. Now I am not saying don't give him what he needs, but prompting him to ask instead of scream for something he wants may break the pattern if it is behavioral. If crying for a toy or drink still makes you run for it, why would he bother trying to speak. Hope it helps!

Before I reply, I want you to know this is a sign that I read your q.
I have done much research on what you are talking about.
My dear, you're vaccinations had mercury in them.
This is a classic case of Autism.
Don't be afraid and don't believe what your doctor tells you.
You can e-mail me at anytime, visit www.mercola.com and type in vaccinations in the search box.

There is a CURE. I don't care what anyone tells you, there is!

BTW, it's not a speech impairment, it's Autism and it causes speech problems, it's not what is wrong with your son.

If you think it's related to his immunization, then I would suggest you look into the subject of vaccine damage. Loss of speech is one possible side effect from vaccines. Your doctor should have given you the information about vaccine risk *before* he gave the vaccine.

Some families have had success reversing vaccine damage through homeopathy. If you want to try, look for a *classical* homeopath in your area.

If he is regressing I'd be concerned.

When I was about 2 I stopped talking. I had a hearing loss.

Given your decription it seems like you may be concerned about possible Autism. It is certainly possible, but get an evaluation before you worry.

But if you feel your peditrican is blowing you off, get a new one, a hearing test and an evaluation... Good luck!

Have his ears checked, Some babys takes longer to talk mine started talking at age 4 and then I couldn't shut him up and he is still going. Just don't start giving him stuff when he points to something make him say what he wants.

I would suggest you consult a different pediatrician. It could be nothing, but it also could be an issue. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

I suggest you have him tested for autism as soon as possible. Early intervention is the best thing, my son was diagnosed when he was 16mths old and he is now almost 4.
