Here is a link to the job I have a question about...
http://www.solano.edu/jobs/display_job.asp?job_id=596

On the JOB ANNOUCEMENT number 4 of the minimum qualifcations states...

"Demonstrated skill in respectful, sensitive and effective communication with people who are diverse in their cultures, ethnicities, language groups, and abilities, and with individuals from all other groups protected from discrimination. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students."

I'm not exactly sure what this means, I realize that I'm probably going to end up having to ask them, but does anyone have an idea of what this could refer to (like volenteer work?)....FYI I've taken a look on most of the jobs offered at the college, and most (if not all) seem to say the same thing.

So how would I demonstrate that I am culturally and politically correct?

Basically they want you to be culturally and politically correct so you don't offend anyone and the college doesn't get sued.

Perform a variety of complex and technical clerical support duties and assist in providing student services in an assigned area such as resignation.

This job looks really fun actually! It just means that you need to be sensitive to the fact that there are students from different ethnic backgrounds; some have a disability. The college just wants to be sure that the person who gets this job doesn't say/do something wrong that could bring on a lawsuit to the college. They are stating it up front to be legally defenseable. (look up Civil Rights Act of 1964 Title VII - all mentioned in the ad are a protected class under Title VII)

Simple, they're letting you know that you'll be coming into contact on the job with a wide variety of people, and they want to make sure you'll be able to get along with them OK and show respect.

For example, if there are co-workers and/or customers who are disabled, I don't want a new hire insulting them or making fun of them.

This job obviously is letting you know right off the bat that you'll run into a variety of people with different backgrounds on the job.

It means don't say anything that could get minorities pissed off. The job is socially delicate, that is you'll be working with all kinds of people and the employers, in this case SCC wants to make sure the students are satisfied with your services and that it won't offend them. They want to emphasis this because you'll be dealing with several different kinds of people in the job.

I think it's sayingthat you basically need to have skills to deal with any and everyone. They dont want you to be working and let's say a Muslim woman walks in with her traditional dress on and you rip her veil off or say damn isnt it hot in there.
I may be worng but that's what I got from it
