You need a bootable floppy disk that has the chkdsk program on it.

This will only work if the hard drive is accessible. (Menaing you don't have hardware/bios issues preventing your hard drive from working)

Put your XP CD into your CD drive and boot the computer
It should boot from the CD and begin the XP set up.
You will get a scrren were you can press "R" to recover your old Windows install. That will scan the disk for you.
