people say im short sighted.. but when was the last time that protests did any good? they need to go to work and stop complaining.. if they dont like how this is run.. THEY CAN LEAVE!

Because of the peace movement after during and after Vietnam war. They succeded in some changes, and also after big marches of black american people in time of King. So they think that today this is the same society that produces same results, like more right for black people , no more segregation, no more Vietnam war.
But today I think society is more lazy, more consumer oriented, more MTV oriented ( party fun stupidity) then to think about real solutions.
Protests don't change the reality people do.
You can't change Iraq question with protests and still be infatueted with your car and spend a lot of fuel. When it comes to your leisure, you don't think about iraquis, or the hunger or the thirst you only think about yourself, and going to protests makes you good, you have a ilusion that you have changed something, and the state is also satisfied because the people have given themselves some steam off, and can go home and be proper citizens.
Action is what changes reality, not indulging in consumer products that make profit on human misery. But when it is fuel that rules our daily life we do only something simbolic to easy our conscience. And that are protests.

A democracy is based on protests: believe it or not. A protest is a way of not conforming. It also doesn’t have to be a march. Something like wearing a band on your wrist that symbolizes something else, wearing an article of clothing with some significance, a sticker on your car expressing your views, or even where you buy your stuff. If you do it to with some ideal behind it to disagree with whatever, it becomes a form of protest. Ironically, your comment is a form of protest.

Maybe sometimes it's important to illustrate to others that we all have the right to express unpopular opinions. Many people are very complacent. Protestors, by exercising their constitutional right, remind us that we are obligated in a truly free society to speak out when we sense a wrong or an injustice.

Why do you assume that protestors don't have jobs? In my family, my wife loves to go to demonstrations... me, not so much. However I can tell you my wife is hard working. She is a legal secretery and puts in over fifty hours a week at her firm... That she finds time in her life to express her political view illustrates to me how very sincere she is.

They do tend to have some skill at educating people on what they are protesting and getting some media time to spread their cause!!!

Perhaps...maybe...you are a tad biased to certain protesters...possibly??? You sound kind of angry in a very general sort of way!!

What are you really trying to get across!!!

it's folks like you holding the door open to fascism in this country. if you haven't picked up on it, the problem with this economy is a huge military commitment to a place in the middle east called iraq.

as an american you have a duty to be involved in political action.

Because of media attention. This gives them far more benefits than the things you suggest. You are short-sighted not to understand this and very naive.

It allows people who feel insignificant deep down inside to feel as if they're important and matter for a little while.

All while inconveniencing those of us who don't need any artificial means to boost our self-esteem.

i think many people who resort to blocking traffic feel that there was no other way to be heard, seen because they have to take time off from work too...
