Let's say you made a list of all your friends and arranged it by person's age in descending order (oldest first). Now you can divide this list into four parts of equal length, or quartiles. The highest (1st) quartile will contain the names of the oldest of your friends, the lowest (4th) quartile, the names of the youngest.

Since dividing into four parts is a fairly basic procedure, there's really no "discoverer" of quartiles...
