Gone are the days when both parties were actually conservative and the difference between them was where the control of spending should be. Republicans wanted it as low as possible and the Democrats wanted it as high as feasible.

Today there are a lot of conservative Democrats who vote for Republicans. And there are a few liberal Republicans who will vote for Democrats.

I suppose the question should really be should we have a Conservative party and a Liberal party instead of Democrats and Republicans?

No I think Democrats and Republican alike would prefer to keep the original labels. There are the extremes and I think they should form their own parties. Most people are moderates.....and belonging to either party is getting difficult. I would never vote Democrat for the simple reason they have the cindy sheehand, howard deans, and michael moores to name a few in their ranks. Maybe all of us moderates should just go to the Independents and let the rest be hanged.

Though the words liberal and conservative are synonymously linked to the words democrat and republican respectivley, they are merely stereotyplical connections. As you stated, there may be any combination of the two: Liberal Democrat, Conservative Democrat, Liberal Republican, or Conservative Republican. The word Liberal is not interchangable with Democrat, nor is Conservative to Republican. The words have different meanings and conotations depending on the context of use. Changing the names would create false impressions of what the parties actually stand for. In short, No, the names should not be changed.

I don't see much difference but since conservatives use the word liberal as a bad word, curse, or insult I bet that would make it easy for conservative not to insult someone that might vote republican.

why does it matter what they call themselves - people vote based on thier plattforms - the republican plattform is traditionally conservation & the democrats are traditionally liberal - people do not say - oh i like the name democrat so i will vote for them they say oh i like thier policies so i will vote for them -

personally they could call themselves the snorks & the smurfs and it would not change what they stand for

additionally i do not think party affiliation makes them the better canidate you have to look at thier individual issues and see where they stand on thoise issues before you decide if you like them

if you have a canidate you like or an issue you feel strong about you should check out http://www.cafepress.com/electionplace for some great shirts, posters & buttons showing support for what & who you stand for!!!

I disagree, we should have lots of smaller parties that represent specific ideals and a coalition government.

Parties like the Green Party for instance that is all about the environment first. There are a lot of them now, but clearly the two party system is failing the people.

Rename them to what...the Jackasses and the Repuklicans! LOL Truthfully, I can't see what difference it would make since the international banksters control both parties.
