Depends on how much you care for this guy. If he's not "important" to you, hard to go wrong with a gift card.
If he is, then it's a big mistake. It's like giving him cash he can only spend in one place. At 40, I didn't care about getting cash. Hell, I earn that every day! What I cared about was being cared about. Someone willing to invest the time to get something special, not just throw plastic dollars at me. On of the most useful gifts I've gotten recently is a SanDisk USB memory stick. They come in all sizes, from about $20 on up....

Is your thinking, Gift Cards because those are popular i.e. Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes, or whatever is in your town. This way, he gets what he wants. Good luck.
