Your SSN is your Tax ID number which is used to identify you. To legally work in the United States you need a SSN. If some one was born in another country they would need a SSN to work. The only way the could work with out one is by getting paid "under the table". Which if caught could get the employer a $5000 fine and will get the the employee arrested and possibly deported. If the some one works that was born in the US and/or has a SSN then he has to fill out an I9 tax form, which is used a to state that the employee is hired a contractor and is responisble for his own taxes. SSN can be used to look up vital information about you. Such as you employment history, credit history, legal history, it could be used to apply for credit cards, and if in the wrong hands some one could even change his identity. That is why it is very important not to give out that info easily.

Yes you do need an SSN, only if you are applying for a Job within USA. You can contact the Social Security Administration in your State/ City for further info on how to obtain one. It is good if you acquire one asap because all employers require an SSN due to federal regulations and tax purposes.

They don't necessarily "look" anything up. They need it because social security taxes must be withheld from your paycheck.

Some employers may run a credit check as part of the screening processor, which may require the usage of your social security number.

Employers are equired by law to have you fill out an I-9 form. This form needs two proofs of identification to prove that you are legal to be employed in the united states. They also need to make a copy of these forms not just right down your number.

Yes, because your employer has to pay into social security.
You have to contribute part of your pay into it. In fact you cannot legally be employed without one. I don't know what happens if you use someone else's. Probably nothing but you won't be able to claim social security benefits later when you retire.

Just an opinion but I don't think they need that information until they have offered you a job, not before.
