I use liquid soap and water. I wash my hands first then wash the lenses with the liquid soap on my fingers. I like the foamy liquid soap the best.
If I have time I let them air dry. If I am in a hurry, I use a cloth towel to dry them. I do not use paper towel or tissues.
My oldest pair is probably 10 years old with very few scratches.

Take an old 100% cotton Tshirt (make sure it is clean) (I guess you could also use a new one if you don't have an old one--still, be sure it is clean) and use pinking shears to cut it into small squares--this fabric will be the perfect density and softness to clean your glasses. If desired, you could purchase some spray-on eyeglass cleaner from an opticians, but always spray it on to the CLOTH, not directly on the lenses.
Great question, by the way.

I have been wearing glasses for longer than I care to say and here's the key to not scratching your lenses: always rinse them off first under water and then lightly blot them dry with a clean tissue or cloth. What scratches a lens is any particles that are on them when you wipe them. I've seen many people use excessive pressure to clean a lens and it isn't necessary. If they are oily, then use a tiny amount of soap on your fingers after you rinse them and then rinse them again. That should take care of it.

Pearle Vision and most eye doctors offer a "kleenex" like box of tissues (almost like paper towels) that are made for this. They don't scratch the lens or leave a dusty residue on the glasses and are like $2-4 a box. I use nothing else.

clean them with a soft material, like a cotton shirt, or get one of those wipey things the eye doctors gives if he decides on not being cheap.
