Hi, this is Bono's bug-goggles. What can black people do to solve African poverty? With blacks now making up large portions of the middle class, and many having v. large sports and business incomes, what can they do to solve poverty in Africa? Can black rappers, businessmen, NAACP, sports figures, politicians be doing more to end the suffering in Africa? And, why do you think they aren't doing this?

Yahoo! Answers note: This is the real Bono's bug-goggles!

I was asking to see if you think wealthy black people should care more and donate more to the African problems. Is it selfishness or non-caring. It seems like Bono and other white people care more about it than black people do.

I think that instead of celebrities doing benifits to help causes like that, they donate some of there hundreds of millions of dollars to the cause instead of making us that can barley get by feel guilty.

I worry about this a lot. I tried to get a benefit dance going for african charity. I supported an african boy in school for a year etc etc. But affluent american blacks seem more interested in victimhood and helping young (middle class) blacks here. Most arent' even interested in visiting africa. I can't understand but i think it has something to do with avoiding the pain of thinking about the past (slavery). I think it's just too painful to look there. I talked to a guy in a black book reading/discussion group and he said the group rejected anything with anything to do with slave times. Just didn't want to read it or discuss it or deal with it.
I think africa brings all that up - the middle passage and horribly painful things. I wish and hope that black americans could get more into the idea you suggest. But i don't see it here in oklahoma.

Interesting question, since there was a related discussion on TV, a few weeks past.

Mostly blacks were involved.
The one theme expressed by most blacks in the group.
More whites who do not spend all their earnings, save and invest in order to leave an estate to their children.

They were of the opinion that blacks do not save enough and therefore their children do not inherit as much or as often as whites, and go through the same struggles as their parents.
Your question might be answered as being a result of still excessive poverty amongst blacks.
I cannot argue one way or another. This topic did take place on TV.

If capable and able Black people who have the resources are able to solve the political strife in Africa, then I say go for it. They are dealing with dictators and war lords that really could care less unless there is something in it for them. Nothing else has worked, so what the heck. Just don't know what type of security these people can expect. I don't believe money will solve this issue. Good luck.

This isn't an issue for "black" or "white" or people of any colour to solve. Poverty in Africa is definitely a concern, but not just for one race or nationality. We all need to work together to solve problems.

We need solidarity and unity when trying to fight a problem. We don't need to ask what the "whites" can do, or what the "blacks" can do to solve a problem. It needs to be one *country* trying to assist.

Only a unified effort will truly have an impact.

There is nothing anyone can do to solve poverty in Africa because the international banksters planned it that way, so if you're smart you'll stop giving money to ALL organized 'poverty' foundations. And that also goes for other organized foundations that collect money for things like heart, cancer, and diabetes research. They're all a scam, because if they weren't, don't you think after 50 years of research that we'd have a cure for these diseases by now??????

no, because black people do not hold the power in this world. we represent about 11 percent of the total population. this is steadily decreasing because everyday we are being told that black leads america in crime, Aids, Heart disease, Cancer and everything.
this is the same dilema black africans face, their life expectancy is now not beyond 35 and after so many years of oppression it is very hard to make up the difference with such a weak foundation.

Are Bono's bug-goggles amazing in their ability to trick people into answering his rhetorical question as if it were a real Yahoo Answers question?

They can do a lot more, but there are people living in horrific conditions too here in Amerikkka which they dont seem care about either. A few good celebrities cant carry the world, but they COULD educate others. Help in numbers.

The governments in some countries are incompetently run. To solve poverty in those countries, ... buy out the government. Move in. Take over -- and run that country in a more civilized and less corrupt way. (Don't you wish we'd done that in Iraq instead of sending in ground troops?)

Good luck.
