Most politicians dont have any real solutions. They also know that most americans are stupid enough to be redirected by things they say to avoid the real answers, which are too frightening to admit to. For example, when asked why we are still occupying iraq, our leaders just barf up some ridiculous crap about fighting for freedom and bringing an end to terrorism. Visions of the flag waving against a bright blue sky, and handsome young soldiers carrying rescued children to safety dance around in our heads, feeding our illusory sense of goodness, rightness, and godliness. (ho hum) What they arent saying is that we are in the middle east to protect our oil interests and promote the global agenda of opressing the masses. Dont be surprised that both parties do this. Corruption has infiltrated both teams.

I don't beieve it is more prevelent on either side.
Ther are at least three reasons for this.
the first is what happens when a politician is asked a question he or she is thinking about the ramifications of the question.
Most Questions are asked with an answer in mind.
The person particularly reporterts ask leading questions to get a certain response.
If the question get the answer that the person is lookng for then they will try to lead the Politican to respond in a way that will make a story out of possibly nothing.
This does not happen all of the time but because it does, every one asked a question has to be prepared for this.
The secon reason is that the person answering the question may not know what the best answer is for their voting audience.
This person is looking to be in an office and represents the public for a certain area.
He or she may not know what their constituency's response is that is why they may be vague.
In these cases you will tend to see that the person comes out to better clarify the answer at a later date. This usually happens after they find out what there voters stand is on the issue.
And e the third type that just like to stay as non committed as possible so they can always say they supported what the right answer in the end is.

I KNOW!!!!
And you are so right about both sides doing it. Everytime I see a politician do that I just get this ewwww feeling inside. Almost to the point of being insulted because, I mean, do they think we are so stupid that we don't see that they just avoided the heck out of answering the question.
It's like a couple weeks ago McCain was on a Sunday morning show and I had never realized how many 'stabs' he throws into his answers before. He is really good at sounding like he answers the questions but if you notice, he will make sure he gets little bits of other stuff in. Like he made sure he said, "..oh yeah I just don't like the way congress gets it's raises now.."
This was his way of getting a little stab in there about congress recently receiving a pay raise after they refused to increase minimum wage.

Because all politicians go into interviews in order to get their viewpoints across and to spin things a certain way. If the question is not quite what they want to talk about, they will answer it with what they DO want to talk about. Yes, I noticed this, too.
But I generally avoid watching politicians on TV, because there's usually nothing new to learn from them, just more spin.

More interested in using the media vehicle to get their own message out. The answer might not be most advantageous to them. Like when your mom asks you if you wrecked the car you might try to change the subject. And show her what good grades you have.

People do this because they don't really care what you say they want to get their own opinion out to the public and more people will see the question then the answers.

Also, when asked about a difficult question on which people are polarized, it would be best if you did not anger the 50% of America which is pro-choice/pro-life/pro-gun-control/anti-gun-control etc.
