Yes, but it would have taken them longer to get noticed. The music was always great, but it took the make up and also "Kiss Alive" to propel them to greater heights of success.

It may have taken longer to break out from the pack. Despite what these haters are saying, their songs were very good, but so were a lot of people's songs in the 70's. Maybe by about the time of Dressed To Kill, with Rock and Roll All Night on it, that would have been a money hit even without makeup.

When they did remove the makeup, the album that they made only had two members of kiss on it, and the songs weren't really as good as their older stuff say, circa 1974-1976. By the time of Lick It Up, they had already put out a few dud albums like Unmasked and the one with I Was Made For Lovin' You Baby on it. That's why the unmasked stuff didn't sell. It just wasn't as good as their good stuff.

I think the makeup and stage presence definetly helped them win fans and get signed to a label, then their songs got nationwide airplay and were liked by radio listeners. (Last time I checked, I couldn't see who was playing a song on the radio!)

Once their songs were established, the makeup again helped concert sales and merchandise sales.

To put it in a diffrent perspective, you could ask the same question about movie actors - Do you like the actor for his/her outfits, or the acting ability? Sometimes it's both, but more often it's the talent of the actor.

Actually, their songs were not that great but their make up was a huge thing and their performance with all the effects. Without make up, they would not have made it. They took off their make up in late 80's and everybody had the chance to see their real faces in the video: Lick it up.

No without that gimmick they would have never been able to brake away from the other bands at the time. The album they did without the makeup didn't sell well.

They did take off their makeup for a while in the 80's or 90's (can't remember which decade it was)...I don't know if it helped album sales though.
