I'm trained in creating a pleasant demo-reel for animation/film, but I'm trying to get a design job and I've never had to put a portfolio for design together.

Give yourself some projects to do. Create some package design ideas, some letterhead/business card ideas, advertisements, callendar, posters... use your imagination, perhaps create a fictional resturaunt or store and create a brand identity around it and create as many things that this store/resturaunt would require (signage, packaging, logo, environments, menu, etc...)

Once you have about 8-10 pieces that you are extremely proud of put them together in a book or a case... matte them creativly and arange them in order of: second best, everything else, best.

Also you will want to create a website for yourself as well as designing your own letterhead, resume, business card, logo and display your portfolio on your site. Make sure everything you use to promote yourself as a designer has a cohesive look and feel.

You may also want to create some sort of leave behind item for when you go on interviews so that the employer will remember you.

Good luck, remember... the design world is extremely comptetitive... be a perfectionist.

Look at all your work you've done.

Sort out the designs, which you really like. scan them, or make photos of them. then...

Make a website which will have all your best work. Its easy to make one. Search the web for free web templates and get a good portfolio template.

Post all your best work there with your contact info and then just market the website to all the ppl you know.

All this in an orderly fashion.
