This depends. I am a web developer and designer. A web developer programs websites while a designer designs them. I do both.
A web developer can make lots of money, but it all depends on YOUR experience. I've been making sites for over 5 years and I can program ASP.NET and ASP. I can also do database design.
It's all your price. If you're good, people will ask you to make your site. If the site needs to be heavily programmed and involves database work, you can charge an upwards of $10,000 for the job. That is not unrealistic. My friend who does web design and programming work charges $3k for a very small site. So a very large site, or medium site, can run about $6000 to $20,000.
The catch, obviously, is you have to complete it and do it right.
If you're doing it as a full-time job, listen to the above poster. I am talking about freelancing.

In terms of salary, it all depends on the experience the developer has, the company they are working for, the location of the company, and the type of work they will be doing...
A developer in Cali. might make between 25-30/hr
where someone in PA might make 16-17/hr...
alot of variables play into the question here so there is no one concrete answer.

Depending on the years of the experience you have, the starting salary is around $45,000 a year. If you are at a senior level, the salary can be $80,000 a year or more. Of course, the salary also depends on the location and the employers too.
