A standard adult novel can be anywhere from 75,000- 100,000 words. A YA (young adult) is 45,000-80,000. There are alwyas exceptions, but if you are planning on it being 180,000 then you've got two books.

Well the average novel is about 80,000-100,000 words long - less if it's targeted at young readers. But don't worry about that during your first draft. Write it all out and then see if there are areas where you can cut back or combine (or split into two books.)
No published author has ever written the book that winds up on the shelves in one try. Most books undergo countless revisions before they're ready to see the light of day.

Your creative writer tutor might have a point there. How many words are in any kind of novel? Some are short, some are long, some are unbareably drawn out and boring. You'll have to decide for yourself when the novel seems 'complete'.

Brilliant question. I would make it long enough, but not to long.
You could turn it into an on going saga. It might become a TV show and then a movie. I'm thinking Tom Cruz as Nigel. Charlize Theron as you.
