How old are you? If you're still in high school or anything, don't worry about it. You'll figure it out. Most people don't know what they want to be until at least their first or second year of college. So concentrate on finishing high school first, but keep your eyes open for other possibilities. Also concentrate on what you like. If you like art, think about being an art teacher, a museum curator or an art therapist. If you like cooking, think about being a chef, pastry artist, or restaurant manager. There's a million and one options for ANY given interest. Let yourself settle into where you feel most comfortable.
The average student changes their major in college 3 times before finding what's best for them. So when you get to college, take your general studies classes FIRST (history, english, fine arts, psychology, etc) and see what calls to you the most. You don't have to jump right into planning for a career.
Personally, I have wanted to be a teacher since 3rd grade. The idea of having all summer, every weekend and every holiday to spend with my future family has really driven me. But teaching's not for everyone. I have changed the subject that I wanted to teach a dozen times however. As of now, I want to teach 11th grade American Studies. But I originally wanted to teach English in Spanish-speaking countries, then I wanted to teach spanish, then I wanted to teach math, then I wanted to teach Astronomy... The possibilities are endless.
The average person also changes careers 2 to 5 times during their lifetime, so you don't have to set anything in stone. See what interests you the MOST and follow your gut feelings. Just don't rule out other oppurtunities. You might not really like english, but after having an amazing english professor and an interesting class, you might change your mind.
There's no need to worry! Everything will work out! Just try your best on everything and keep marching forward! Good luck!!!!

Here's how to figure it out: go outside and do something. Get off the computer. Go hunting for personal experiences, especially with people whom you don't know. How, you ask? Get a job. Join an organization. Travel - go visit a friend/relative in another city. Challenge your biggest fears, be it public speaking or rock climbing or bungee jumping.
Each personal experience you have in life puts information into your internal experience bank. This bank of information will let you determine honestly your likes and dislikes which will guide your life. You can't just 'pick' something to be when you grow up - but with experience a direction will grow into you.

Talk to a guidance counselor at school. Take some of the aptitude tests that are offered to see what areas appeal to you. Think about what areas you are strong in academically, and see what careers are available in those areas.
Good luck! I chose my profession rather quickly and have been working in that field for 20 years. I enjoy what I do and I'm very good at what I do, but I definitely get bored sometime.

I am 35 and still don't know what I want to be. All I know is that I don't want to be doing what I am now five years from now. Boring work, no inspiration.
