The difference is where the control is supposed to be. If you believe most things should be controlled a the Federal level then you are probably a Democrat. If you believe in taking care of things at the lowest possible level of government then you are probably a Republican. Today however the lines are becoming blurred as to who is really what.
All this has nothing to do with the sub classes of each party. There are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. There are more conservative Democrats than liberal Republicans. This explains why Republicans have taken and kept control of congress and why Bush won over Gore and Kerry. Those conservative Democrats are conservative first and Democrat second. They work hard for their money and didn't like the way the liberal Democrats were spending it. So they voted Republican.

Democrats are godless, tree-hugging hippies who are known to sympathize with terrorists. Usually congregated at your local welfare line, these communist scumbags would like to charge you for everything from being a global, multibillion dollar corporation to the right to die.
Republicans are the spawn of Hitler. They can usually be found in the military, waving flags and shouting moronic slogans while being shot at by Democrats. Often inbred, the average Republican IQ is equal to the number of teeth these rednecks have.

Republicans wants to give money to the rich, democrats wants to take it from the poor, but Democrats provide you with much needed services, while Republicans use it to make themselves richer. Thus providing a never ending cycle that just makes them richer and richer.
