Lets say you have walked 5 miles up thin strip of beach. The strip of beach, no wider than a football field at it's widest point, separates the intracoastal waterway and the atlantic ocean. Hence, water on both sides. The beach is a wildlife refuge and therefore contains absolutely no man-made objects.
Assume that a large thunderstorm rapidly approaches, giving you approximately 20 minutes before the heavy rains, blinding lightning and deafening cracks of thunder begin. You have a backpack and a fishing pole. The fishing pole is a graphite composite 7' foot rod, with a machine grade aluminum reel. You have a stainless steel leatherman attached to your belt and a GPS unit in your pocket. In your bookbag you have about two pints of water and several lures, many containing lead sinkers embedded within them.
Assume the lightning and thunder will last about 2 hours. What the heck do you do?

Hypothetically, the weather was checked, and like any "prediction," it is not 100% accurate, ya MORON.

Lay all your gear down. Move at least 50' away and lay down. Enjoy the show. If your really worried dig a hole to sit in.

Fishing Pole: Insert 1 foot in the ground and set it up vertically. Once it gets wet, it will conduct. It is not the best lightning rod - but it could help, you never know.

GPS, Leatherman, Water, Lures, Sinkers ... put them all in your backpack and set the backpack beside the "lightning rod".

Yourself: Dig a shallow hole in the sand and lay in it. The hole should be about 75 - 100 yards from your "lightning-rod" fishing pole.

WARNING: If you feel that your hair is starting to stand up and feel stadicy - run far and run fast!

Well, if you really can't get out of the area because lightning is striking all around you, make yourself the lowest object on the beach. To do this, go into the fetal position or lay flat on your stomach or back until the storm passes.

Drop the stuff you have and try to get in the lowest area ya can w/o drowning yourself. I would walk/run to where I needed to go though. If God wants you to be hit with lightning, there's no stopping him. lol

Dump all metal objects, crouch down to make yourself as low as possible if there is no shelter available. If there are any low places such as a ditch get in there.

Get out of the water, and don't worry too much about it. Your chances of being struck are infinitesimal.
