France captain Zinedine Zidane was apparently called a "dirty terrorist" by Marco Materazzi before he head-butted the Italy defender in Sunday's World Cup final, the anti-racism group SOS Racism said on Monday.

Firstly, there is no basis for accusing Materazzi of being the villain or racist. Why people are suggesting he provoked Zidane is a mystery. There is no evidence to suggest Materazzi did anything wrong. The supposed professional lip readers employed to decipher Materazzi's language are not coming up with a definitive answer as there are many different interpretations of what could have been said floating around. For example, some sources say it was a racist slur by Materazzi while other say it was something about Zidane's mother, sister, and/or wife All we do know is that Materazzi and Zidane were talking back and forth. It could have been Zidane who provoked a verbal response from Materazzi which Zidane hated or it could simply have been a mutual exchange of obscenities. Nobody knows right and anything said is pure speculation based primarily on bias for 1 side over the other. These are things people who say Materazzi "must" have said something are overlooking in their rush to defend Zidane. There is no proof and it is simply a case of finding Materazzi guilty without evidence. Guilty until prven innocence. Simply because you hate someone doesn't mean they are guilty.
Secondly, people who portray Zidane as a normally calm person either do not know his tendencies or overlook the evidence. Zidane has a history of spontaneous violent outbursts on the field including other headbutting instances and stomping on players with intent to injure. .
Thirdly, there is no need to make prejudicial comments regarding French or Italians.

Materazzi did say that Zidane was a 'dirty terrorist' and he said something very rude to Zindanes family and that is why Zidane did what he did which I think Materazzi deserved because he was being racist and should have been red carded. It was a very stupid and mean thing for Materazzi to do to Zidane on his very last game but I suppose we should have known something like this would happen since the italians are cheats and that was the only way that they could beat France by cheating like they always do and I'm surprised that they didn't pay off the refs.

Zinedine Zidane's agent says the France captain headbutted Marco Materazzi in yesterday's World Cup final because the Italian made a "very serious" comment, the BBC is reporting.
Zidane appeared to react to something that was said and was dismissed for his violent charge into his opponent.
An Italian lip-reader told the BBC that Materazzi said: "I wish an ugly death to you and all your family." Zidane is thought to have just received news that his mother is in ailing health.
According to the lip-reader, Materazzi then said: "Go f*** yourself."
A Brazilian television channel, Globo, quoted lip-readers as saying the Italian defender called Zidane's sister a "whore".
Agent Alain Migliaccio told BBC's Five Live Sport: "He told me Materazzi said something very serious to him but he wouldn't tell me what."

I think Zidane was provoked. He usually keeps his cool so whatever Materazzi said must have been horrible enough to make zidane head butt him. There have been reports that zidane was called a "terrorist" simply because of his arab backround. If this is the case then I applaud Zidane for his actions. Also FIFA should heavily fine Materazzi.

Guys, lets remember... Zidane is a person... an EXCELLENT player, but not a GOD and for that reason people should accept the fact that his actions are not excusable. As for those saying Italians are cheats and so on, you're making a disgrace of your own background and making the french look like sore losers so go out with a bit of dignity and be happy you're second in the world. Lastly, even if something relating to race WAS said, by everyone excusing zidane's action based on those grounds, you're basically saying "people of the world, if anyone says anything to you that hurts your feelings, its okay to go over there and knock them out" EVERYONE needs to grow up.
So far, I've read two news paper articles, both of which used their own lip readers to decipher what materazzi said and interestingly, one managed to make out something about a terrorist while the other one said he made a comment about his mother. Very interesting since they're reading the SAME lips. Stop with the speculation and stop with the bad mouthing... its not going to win the cup for France. go down as a good team who made it second in the world, not as a bunch of ignorant sore losers. do yourselves a favour.

The "terrorist" accusation is false. Fantastico, a Brasilian TV on the network Globo, hired some lip-reading experts and they found that Materazzi insulted Zidane's sister, apparently calling her a "whore" and that he insulted his sister once more prior to the head butt insult, but i haven't found what the insult was. Also, i guess Materazzi was trash-talking to Zidane the entire match. It would piss me off too, but for a man with that much poise, maturity, and experience...he has no excuse for that

Really though, whatever was said does it really matter??? first of all it's the world cup the biggest game of zidane's final year and to "lose your cool" over some simple words, i don't care what was said, walk away your playing for yourself and your country why let some trash talk, blow it, you are obviously gonna be red carded for a sterum headbutt. and get real either way red card or no red card zidane was not owning the field in the first place the game would have went down the same way it did. and that the Itailians stealing the win.

Expert from the BBC's Language Unit says the actual comment is "unbroadcastable" but essentially insulted Zidane's family and wished an ugly death on them.
Incidentally, Zidane may be a fantastic player but has a worse disciplinary record than VInnie Jones (14 career red cards).

Actually what happened was on that play... when materazzi grabbed zidanes jersey, zidane said "Hey, if you really want my jersey you can have it after the game." To which (according to sportcenter) materazzi replied, "I wish death to you and all of your family. Go F--- yourself."
Vive Le Francais!
