I want to sent a cheque for the nieces birthday, any clues how far in adance I need to send it?

The Royal Mail's target time is 5 working days (using Airmail). However, if you use their Airsure service it'll shave a day off that time.

Depends on how they sent it but letters take about a week to 10 days and small packages up to a month general post
