You need to know English for the same reason you "need" most other things in life: convenience and opportunity.

If you live in an English-speaking country, not speaking English limits the jobs you can get (and reduces how much you will be paid to do them), what stores you can shop at, and what restaraunts you can go to, and what movies you can see. Being able to communicate with the larger community and not just the people in your neighborhood helps you have more, learn more, and do more.

If you don't live in an English-speaking country, then it's just about whether or not you want that kind of job. You wouldn't think that, say, a programmer would need to know English but there's a reason U.S. companies outsource to English-speaking India rather than many of the equally skilled and almost equally inexpensive Eastern European countries. Really, though, it's just a choice of what kind of job you want.

If you want to live, work, or go to school in a place where English is the predominant language, it will make your life a lot easier if you can communicate. Trying to talk to someone who doesn't know the language is frustrating for both parties, and could lead to errors or misunderstandings.

Some people think the host community should accommodate foreigners by learning their language instead. This is wrong for four reasons:

1) The natives are a majority; it's much easier for one person to learn a new language than many. You will probably find some people who speak your language, but the majority won't know enough to be useful.

2) In any nation there will be visitors who speak a number of different languages; so multiply the above point by the number of foreign languages introduced. It isn't practical to learn them all.

3) Everything from signs to bus schedules will already be in the nation's native language. It simply isn't possible to change them to include every foreign language a visitor may know.

4) Most importantly, it is rude and arrogant to expect a host nation or community to change something as basic as their language to satisfy your convenience. It's their home, not yours.

Because English is the common language around the world. If you go to Europe, aside from an individual country's native language, people usually speak English as well. In every other continent English is well represented. If your business involves international/interregional relations, you need to know English. Now if we can just get everyone in America to speak English!

I'm born in the USA but It is always good to have other language skills other than your native one. I am going to classes to try to learn Japanese,we are planning a trip to Japan in 2007 so I would enjoy knowing how to converse with people there,(a lot speak English) and out side of Tokyo.(most don't) And no I don't think in that short time I will be that good at it but I'm going to try. If you live in the USA or any other English speaking country it would benefit you to learn the language spoken there .
